S2: Evolution of the FZ6 series

image

The road from Almeria to Sorbas is fantastic. It winds on an on and on into the mountains, each corner a different radius, and the tarmac gives tremendous grip.

This is the scene of the FZ6 press launch in Spain. Journalists from all over Europe are flown in to test the latest generation FZ6 series!
“The FZ6 is Europe’s most successful mid-class model”, explains Darrell Taylor, product planner for Yamaha Europe. “We have gone for a sporty model concept, with a very high horsepower and very light weight. The engine is derived from the R6 engine and has a sporty, high-revving character and we use latest supersports technologies like a full aluminium chassis.”

What’s new for 2007?
“We have increased the attractiveness of the FZ by the S2 model, which has many new high-spec components. In addition to that, we also have a basic 78 HP model which is intended to be the affordable, easy entry into the Fazer family. And last but not least, from now on there is ABS available in all the model variations!”

The new S2 model  has the following high-specification components added:

  • A new, diamond shape aluminium swingarm with a more rigid axle fixation, for more precise handling.

  • Front brake callipers that are four-piston monobloc type (as on the previous R series), for powerful and precise braking.

  • A redesigned front fork with a sturdy, black alumite coating and newly designed front fender.

  • A new, lightweight instrument panel with large analog rpm counter, same type as on the FZ1, for excellent readability.

  • New passenger footrest brackets that are made of aluminium for lighter weight. They are now of a removable bolt-on type. They also give a more comfortable passenger position by being positioned 4.5cm lower than before.

  • The seat has a new texture with a combination of 2 materials for good anti-slip properties.

  • The fairing (on the Fazer model) is new, with a more sharp and aerodynamic design and an air intake under the screen to reduce turbulence.

Accessories: from Streetfighter to Sports Touring
“You can really make a streetfighter out of it” says Roland Snel, area manager for Yamaha Europe. “or a Sports Tourer, if you add the full fairing: it is really a different bike then.” Over 30 accessories have been developed by Yamaha as genuine accessory for the FZ6 range!
